There are lots of pet memorial ideas to help you to remember your pet, from creating a custom personalised pet memorial for your home, to writing a eulogy to post online, or to creating a memory box. All of these pet memorial ideas help you to commemorate your pet, pay homage to your relationship with them, and create a space for your memories of them in your home, but most importantly, the process of creating a pet memorial can help you to deal with losing a pet.

Create a custom personalised pet memorial

At My Beloved Pet, we create custom pet memorials to honour your pet for all the love and joy they gave you. Through a friendly interview with you, I help you to focus on your most treasured memories of your pet and compose a eulogy for them that is set alongside their image to make an attractive artwork. You select the photos, choose with me the words by which to best remember your pet, and also choose backgrounds, frames and designs that suit your pet’s personality. Through this process, you create a beautiful pet memorial that integrates into your home’s décor and lets you live side by side with the memories of your pet, memories that you can now easily share with any friends and family who might visit.

Dealing with the loss of a pet

When it comes to pet memorials, it’s often the very act of creating the memorial that helps you to deal with losing a pet. The process of creating a personalised pet memorial artwork can be very cathartic, as it makes you focus on your pet’s life as a whole rather than upon its most final stages. The memory bank of pictures, observations and feelings that you have stored up inside you can bring a smile back into your world. It is this memory bank that we call on during our interview, so that your pet’s clever tricks, funny habits, and warm and fuzzy nuzzles are recorded forever alongside your favourite image of them.

Digital scrapbook, photo album, or simply a social media post

One of the simplest pet memorial ideas is to create a digital scrapbook. You can be as extravagant as to use an online scrapbooking platform that allows you to choose the theme, photos and text that will best capture your pet’s personality, or you can go simple and post photos of your pet with their eulogy on Facebook. The trick is to create the scrapbook while your memories of your pet are still fresh and vivid; the fresher they are, the more of them there will be. If you think you might want to have a personalised memorial created, but aren’t ready to talk about your pet, a digital scrapbook will help to capture the little details that can make a custom-eulogy extra special.

Create items for your home

Creating a physical item for your home that you can use every day can be a great way to help you to heal from the loss of a beloved pet. You can have their image printed on cushions, mugs, blankets, and clothing too. Sitting down with a warm drink with a cuppa decorated with your pet’s funnly little face, or snuggling up in a blanket that their image printed on it can bring you close to them and make it feel like they still have a place beside you in your home.

Creating a memory box

Alternatively, you may want to create a memory box to visit. You can place it somewhere in your home that reminds you of your pet and or hide it away for when you feel ready. In the box, put things that remind you of your pet, such as their collar, toy or blanket. Sitting with the memories that come with items like these will take you back to special moments in your precious pet’s life, like the first time you took them for a walk, how angelic they looked when they slept, or the joy they expressed whenever they played with that toy.

Pet memorial ideas when you know your pet is going to pass away

Knowing your pet is going to pass away soon gives you precious time to prepare for their loss. When I knew that Silverstar, the cat who inspired My Beloved Pet, had only 6 months to live, I focussed on him in a mindful way, carefully momorising the feel of his fur, his breath on my cheek, the weight of him in my lap, and noting all the little things that he did that made him special to me. Memories created by mindfully engaging with your pet will help you to process their loss when the time comes and carry you over to the other side of your grief. Sit quietly with your little darling, be present and immersed. Pat them with awareness and alertness: sometimes we pat our pets out of habit while we’re watching TV or eating dinner, or shoo them away because we’re too busy, but these are actually golden opportunities to connect with your pet and make them, and you, feel especially loved.

Beginning the process of creating a pet memorial while you still have your pet with you will also help: maybe you can book an appointment with a pet photographer, and have created beautiful image of them that can be used later. Another great idea is to start jotting down little notes to yourself, about their habits, their peculiarities and quirks, and old memories too, faded but still there, of the days when they were a puppy, a kitten, or a duckling. Take time to remember when you first met each other, when first you bathed them, or what it was like to sleep with them.
